Each month, motor vehicle accidents claim the health and lives of thousands of NYC residents

Along the busy and congested streets of New York City, traffic accidents are an everyday and common occurrence. While, through its Vision Zero campaign, Mayor de Blasio's administration is taking steps to improve the safety of the city's streets and reduce the number of traffic-related injuries and deaths, statistics from New York City's Police Department prove just how far the city has to go to meet its goal of reducing traffic deaths to zero.

According to the NYPD, this February alone, police officers responded to a total of 16,851 motor vehicle collisions. As a result of these accidents, a total of 3,665 people suffered injuries and 18 people lost their lives. A review of the factors that police officers identified as contributing to these accidents provides a revealing look into why thousands of drivers, passengers, bicyclists and pedestrians continue to be injured and killed along New York City's streets each year.

By far, distracted or inattentive driving was the most common factor cited by police officers as contributing to traffic accidents. In fact, during February alone, distracted drivers throughout the city caused at least 3,476 accidents. Additionally, both following too closely and failing to yield the right-of-way contributed to more than 1,100 accidents each while unsafe lane changes, backing unsafely and improper lane usage all contributed to more than 600 collisions each.

The costs of being involved in a motor vehicle accident can range from hundreds to hundreds of thousands of dollars and frequently include vehicle repair costs, medical bills and lost wages. In cases where a loved one is killed, to family members, the costs are innumerable. Individuals who have suffered financial and personal losses due to a driver's reckless and unlawful actions should consider speaking with an attorney about taking legal action to recover compensation.
