Construction barge struck, workers killed

When thinking of construction accidents, you might think of accidents that happen on solid ground. Those aren't the only kinds of construction accidents that can occur. Some construction workers do their job duties on construction barges. When one of these construction barges is involved in an accident, the results can be devastating. An accident near the Tappan Zee Bridge on March 12 highlights this point.

The accident occurred when a tugboat slammed into a construction barge. There were a total of three tugboats escorting the barge when the accident occurred before dawn. Three workers died in the accident. It took almost 2 weeks for those three bodies to be recovered.

New information has recently come to light that points to negligence on the part of the captain of the tugboat that smashed into the barge. Westchester County police note that a witness said that there was a person on the boat that wasn't reported. That person is reported to be a woman who was with the captain below deck on a different boat. That would mean that the captain wasn't in control of the tugboat he was supposed to have been piloting when it struck the barge.

For the family members of the three men who died in the accident on the construction barge, that information is likely infuriating. They have to live with knowing their loved ones might have died because the captain was occupied by the mystery woman.

Anyone who loses a loved one in a construction accident might choose to seek compensation. This can be a complex process that you should fully understand before you proceed.
