Tappan Zee bridge crane crash causes injuries

A crane that was working on the new Tappan Zee bridge collapsed onto the old bridge while it was being traversed by some of the 130,000 vehicles that cross it on a daily basis. Fortunately, the crane didn't smash into any vehicles before it slammed to the ground. Still, two construction workers and three motorists were injured in the incident.

All lanes were blocked by the crane, and the bridge was shut down until the structural integrity could be determined. That left many people stranded on the old bridge with no viable option to get off the bridge.

The crane that came crashing down was a new crane, but it was placed on the unfinished new bridge. It was holding a vibratory hammer at the time of the accident. The president of the Tappan Zee Constructors noted that they are working to determine the cause of the accident. Some of the possible causes he mentioned were operating error, the vibratory hammer or the crane.

It was noted that the crane was working on a routine task at the time of the incident. It wasn't immediately noted what size crane this was that failed.

For the workers and motorists who were injured, a normal day turned traumatic. None of these individuals were injured by the crane itself. Instead, the motorists were injured by vehicles having to swerve and brake suddenly in an effort to avoid debris. The cause of worker injuries wasn't provided.

People who are injured in construction accidents have the right to seek compensation for their injuries. Determining how to do this is important so that you can ensure you are taking the appropriate steps.
