Window washer suffers serious head injury in fall

A window washer is in the hospital with a serious head injury after he fell about three stories. The man was working in Manhattan at the time of the accident, and reports indicate that he was actually working on the 19th floor of the building. As such, this could easily have been a fatal accident. His life was saved, though, when he landed on a scaffold after the three-story fall.

According to reports, he wasn't new to the job or the building, but came there regularly to do the job.

The building in question is at 110 W. 38th Street. The incident occurred just after the start of the work day, at about 9:30 a.m. Witnesses saw him fall and emergency crews were called. They got the man down, put him into a back brace for safer transportation and then brought him to the hospital.

Firefighters were among the emergency response team, and an area barber says they came quickly.

The exact cause of the incident is not yet known. Interestingly, there is one open violation against the owner of that building, though it is from 2013. The owner apparently neglected to file a facade report that year. Currently, the New York Department of Labor is carrying out an investigation to find out what happened and why.

The man is in serious condition with his head injury, as of the last reports.

High-risk jobs like washing windows can lead to catastrophic injuries and even death -- which was narrowly avoided here. The families of those who are hurt or killed may be able to seek compensation for medical bills, the cost of an emergency response team, lost wages and more.
