Federal data indicates traffic fatalities to be on the rise

Federal officials recently announced an ambitious safety goal: achieving no traffic fatalities in the next 30 years. The goal coincides with a U.S. Transportation Department implementation plan targeting safety areas such as seat belt use; rumble strips, and campaigns against distracted or drunk driving. DOT officials have committed $3 million to the safety goal.

However, a recent statistic calls into question the feasibility of the safety goal. According to data compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, fatal traffic accidents in the United States are up by over 10 percent compared to the same six-month period one year ago. In addition, the increase suggests a disturbing trend: Since the last quarter of 2014, traffic fatalities have risen for seven consecutive quarters. Prior to 2014, fatal traffic accidents were on a general decline.

As a personal injury law firm that has represented many victims of pedestrian and motor vehicle accidents, we are all too familiar with various forms of negligence behind the wheel. Distracted driving, drunk driving and traffic violations like speeding are just a few behaviors that come to mind. In a busy metropolitan area with heavy pedestrian traffic, like New York City, driver distraction can be a recipe for disaster.

Victims of an automobile accident may have serious injuries and financial pressures. However, it may take the advocacy of an experienced personal injury law firm to prompt insurance companies into action. Although the majority of personal injury lawsuits are resolved by settlement, the act of preparing for litigation can help victims get closer to the full amount of compensation they deserve. Our attorneys know how to evaluate the facts, gather supporting evidence, and work with experts in accident reconstruction and medicine to build a persuasive claim.
