Properly installed child safety seats can save lives in crashes

Think about how hard it is to be involved in a car accident. Even if the accident wasn't that bad, you are probably feeling shaken up. Now, imagine that the accident led to the death of a child. That shaken up feeling has probably been replaced with utter grief. Sadly, many families have to death with the death of a child because of car accidents. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that car accidents are a leading cause of childhood death.

There are a few things that people who travel with children in the car can do to help keep these little ones safe. The number one thing that can be done is make sure that the child is properly restrained in an appropriate child safety seat. This alone can reduce childhood deaths and injuries considerably.

Simply placing the child in the car seat or child safety seat might seem like it will help the child to stay safe. That isn't the case at all. A child who isn't in a seat that is properly installed and using the restraints properly can actually suffer from injuries that are worse than what might occur if the child wasn't restrained at all.

If you travel with children, take the time to ensure that car seats and booster seats are installed properly. Out of 3,500 booster and car seats that were checked as part of a study, 72 percent weren't installed properly.

When a car accident leads to the injury or death of a vehicle occupant, seeking compensation is possible if the other motorist was at fault. If you opt to pursue this option, be sure that you know what to expect.
