New York Lawyer For Truck Accident Amputations

Commercial trucking accidents often result in catastrophic and permanently disabling injuries.  Although many defense lawyers and insurance adjusters will argue that some injuries are not permanent and are not disabling, that argument does not work with an amputation.  This type of personal injury is always permanent and always disabling, and it is often caused by 18-wheeler wrecks because of the greater force of an impact with a big rig.  According to statistics, there are over 2.1 million people living in the United States with the loss of a limb, which increases every year by about 185,000 due to new injuries resulting in amputations.  If you are one of those new cases due to a motor vehicle, personal injury accident, or tractor-trailer wreck, call our experienced trucking accident lawyer in New York for help.

This is because an amputation after a trucking accident in New York often impacts not just the victim, but also the entire family.  An injury of this magnitude often causes overwhelming physical, emotional, and financial burden for a family.  If this happens to you and your family, find out why our experienced and compassionate team at the O’Connor Law Firm is the choice among other catastrophic injury victims throughout the Bronx, Queens, Staten Island, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Long Island, and throughout New York.  We offer personalized attention when handling your case and give FREE consultations to learn more about your legal rights under the law.  To schedule your free appointment, call (718) 948-3500.

How Do Amputations Happen?

NYC Sanitation

Generally, there are two leading causes of amputations.  The first is disease, often diabetes or infection, that results in the loss of a limb.  The second is trauma, notably including extensive damage done to a digit or limb due to a motor vehicle accident.  The more severe the motor vehicle accident and the more trauma that is inflicted on the limb, the more likely that a limb cannot be saved and may need to be amputated.

This is why trucking accidents often result in amputations.  Commercial vehicles are heavier than passenger vehicles.  This means that commercial vehicles generate more momentum at a lower speed than other vehicles.  Because of this increased momentum, there is a greater force in an impact.  It is that force which is more likely to cause serious or catastrophic trauma to a limb resulting in an amputation.

More specifically, amputations could occur in a trucking accident when:

  • Limbs are crushed
  • An arm is caught in a door as a result of a sideswipe or t-bone crash
  • When the dashboard collapses and traps a lower extremity
  • Burn injuries in a crash
  • A limb is at a point of impact and severed
  • Severely broken injuries that result in nerve or vascular injuries
  • Compartment syndrome in a limb
  • Infections caused by significant lacerations or damage in a limb from a crash, and
  • Other common types of crashes that may result in a loss of a limb.

Types of Amputations

There are many different types of amputations that could be caused by a motor vehicle accident.  This includes the following:

  • Digit amputation (finger or toe)
  • Wrist disarticulation (hand amputation) or ankle disarticulation (foot amputation)
  • Forearm amputation (transradial)
  • Lower leg amputation (transtibial)
  • Above the elbow amputation (transhumeral)
  • Above the knee (transfemoral)
  • Entire arm or leg, and
  • Other types of serious or catastrophic amputations from the body, including an ear, nose, or other extremity, limb, or appendage.
